Healthy Eating Isn’t Working Anymore—Here’s Why (And What Your Body Actually Needs)

If you’ve ever thought: “I’m eating well… so why do I still feel bloated, tired, and not quite right?” You’re not alone. Many busy, overwhelmed women reach a point where they’re doing everything “right” with their diet—but their body still feels off.
You might be:
Choosing healthy foods like adding in extra fibre, eating big raw salads and drinking lots of cold water or drinks
Making an effort with your meals
Trying to take care of yourself by adding in more exercise and trying to be social and saying 'Yes' to everything
And yet still experiencing:
Bloating or discomfort
Low or inconsistent energy
Feeling wired, stressed, or on edge
If healthy eating isn’t working anymore, it’s not a lack of effort.
There’s usually something deeper going on. Lets look at some of the key factors that could be at play
1. Over-Restriction or focusing heavily on creating instagram 'healthy meals' Can Work Against You
When results don’t come, it’s natural to try harder.
This often leads to:
Cutting out more foods and avoiding entire food groups
Increasing our fibre intake quickly or 'fibremaxxing'.....ouch
Overthinking every meal
But over-restriction and tunnel vision when it comes to meals can actually create more stress in the body.
It can:
Disrupt your relationship with food
Increase pressure around eating
Make meals feel like something to “get right”
And for a body that’s already feeling overwhelmed, this added pressure can keep it stuck.
Sometimes, the issue isn’t that you need to remove more—it’s that your body needs more support.
2. Stress Can Cancel Out a “Perfect” Diet
You can eat the most balanced, nutrient-rich meals—but if your body is constantly in a stressed state, it changes how those foods are processed.
When you’re busy, rushing, or mentally overloaded, your body shifts into a “fight or flight” mode.
In this state:
Digestion slows down
Stomach acid production can decrease
Nutrient absorption becomes less efficient
This means your “perfect” diet may not be working as you expect.
It’s not just about what you eat—it’s about the state your body is in when you eat it. The stress hormone cortisol plays a key role in our difficulty managing the stress and this can be consistently elevated during the peri-menopause years. It can become so much more difficult to manage stress the way we used to and our tolerance and threshold can appears so much lower. This is due to the fluctuations in both Progesterone and Estrogen which can destabilise our body's stress management system.
3. Gut Sensitivity Increases Under Pressure
If you’ve noticed that foods you used to tolerate now cause bloating or discomfort, stress could be playing a role.
When your nervous system is under pressure:
The gut becomes more sensitive
You may react more strongly to certain foods
Bloating and discomfort can become more frequent
This can make it feel like your body is “reacting to everything.”
But often, it’s not the food itself—it’s the environment your body is operating in.
4. The Missing Piece: Your Nervous System
Most approaches to gut health focus only on food.
But your nervous system plays a key role in how your digestion functions.
Your body needs to feel safe and regulated to properly:
Break down food
Absorb nutrients
Maintain steady energy
If your system is constantly switched on—due to a busy lifestyle, stress, or mental load—your gut doesn’t get the conditions it needs to work well.
This is why focusing only on diet can feel frustrating.
You’re addressing one piece of the puzzle, but not the whole picture.
My Experience
I have been where you are now. During a challenging period of life when work pressure and difficult personal life experiences collided to put my whole nervous system into an adrenalin fueled rollercoaster of a ride - cue a shut down, tense and dysfunctional digestive system which led to constant heartburn, indigestion, abdominal pain and bloating that felt unsustainable. All aspects of my life were affected by these symptoms, my precious time with my family, my friendships, ability to function as I wanted at work along with my enjoyment of life. At the time I hadn't be able to connect that I was constantly eating my meals whilst my stomach was in knots with tension, barely stopping for a breath as I was rushing onto the next task.
I felt overwhelmed with the diet advice I was seeking online and I thought that the only way to go was to cut out lots of food groups to see what could be causing my digestive sensitivity, along with committing myself to meals piled with lots of fresh, raw vegetables and salads, very low complex carbs, fat or protein, which only exacerbated my heartburn, bloating and leaving me crippled with trapped gas and pain.
When I started to strip everything back and focus on making small, sustainable and simple changes to my diet and lifestyle, which enabled my digestion and nervous system to finally feel safe and begin to slowly reset, I felt those uncomfortable symptoms of burning in my stomach, all day bloating, abdominal pain and constipation just disappear, leaving me calmer and more confident in my body once again.

Eating in a slightly more relaxed state
Supporting stable energy throughout the day
